Origin:
Shih Tzu breed is well known throughout the world for its toy size and friendly nature. The earliest ancestor of Tibetan dogs like the Shih Tzu is the Gobi Desert Kitchen Midden dog, which is 10,000 years old.
This breed probably moved from Tibet to China between 1644 and 1662 during the time of the Qing dynasty. The Shih Tzu was known as the lion dog.
This dog was considered to be part of the royal family and lived in incredible temples. At times, the ancestor of the dog we know today may have been given to an emperor of China.
Scientists have found fossils from more than 10,000 years ago, showing that the dogs of that day were closely related to the breed that is now recognized. It was the Chinese Empress Cixi who carefully bred the dogs and gave birth to the breed we know today.
However, after the Communist Revolution, his large breeding facilities, along with most of the dogs, were destroyed. Only a few Shih Tzu dogs were saved and imported into England. It was there that they were bred with the Pekingese.
The breed was perfected from 1930 to 1950. History of Shih Tzu Dog Only then did the Shih Tzu breed move into the United States. In the year 1955, the American Kennel Club accepted the dog, but only as a variety class.
This was because there were so few Shih Tzu dogs. Unless a breed becomes popular, the AKC can decide to disallow it from the Miscellaneous class; therefore a group of people decided to form the Shih Tzu Club of America in 1957.
Shih Tzu as a Companion:
Although its name mean little lion, there is nothing fierce about it. These are compassionate companions with deep affection towards the family. Their happy and joyous nature surely makes the one of the most lovable pets.

Generally, Shih Tzu dogs can vary from 8 to 11 inches in height and 4 to 7.5 Kgs in weight. They have a fairly good life expectancy of 10 – 18 years. These dogs are less demanding, needs less exercise, and their toy shaped body along with their low yappiness makes them a perfect fit as an apartment pet.
Shih Tzu puppies have a great temperament and gets very well with children. So, if you have children at home, don’t worry these dogs will be the perfect partner to them. Unlike Big dogs who loves to dig a hole in ground or chases a cat, Shih Tzu’s hobby is just relaxing in your lap, displaying its enchanting charm while you are busy.
Since Shih Tzu have Hairs, they won’t mess up your home as normal furry dogs do due to shedding. Dog with hair coats are less likely to shed as opposed to Dog with Fur. Yes, there is other side of the coin. Shih Tzu require more attention with frequent haircuts because of their long Hairs. Shih Tzu are little dogs and require little exercise. A small walk along the backyard or just little “get the ball / stick” play is enough to keep it fit and happy.
Care Needed:
Shish Tzu have small face due to which heavy exercise are not ideal as they may cause breathing problems in them. They are sensitive to heat and not ideal for hot weather condition unless kept in moderately cold rooms.
Extreme heat may cause heat strokes and could cause heart attacks to Shih Tzu. Hence if you live in area where sun god is stubborn and shows what he is capable of, we won’t recommend these little creatures to you.
Shih Tzu though friendly are lazy to learn or pick up something new taught to them. So, if you are planning to own this tiny dog, ensure you have patience to train it.
They do eventually learn the tricks taught to them, which would certainly make you feel on the top of the world. The important task that every owner should remember is that Shih Tzu should be properly socialized and trained from beginning else they become timid.

Share your love but not food: Shih Tzu Food habits
When it comes to human food, Most of the pet owner considers human food as an alternate healthy diet for their pet. Many people add certain human food into their dog’s diet, because they are not sure whether it is good for them or not? Weight gain can happen more easily in tiny Shih Tzus than with other larger dogs.
Is it ok to feed Shih Tzu with human food like, bread or ice cream? And is it healthy for them? Not every human food is healthy for your pet. But yes, Shih Tzus can eat bread, because of all Carbs, Salt, Refined Sugar and Preservatives that it contains. Giving them it in moderation is fine. But dairy products and ice cream may cause diarrhea in your dog.
Dogs’ bodies are not designed to digest dairy products. Ice cream is made with milk and sugar, letting your dog eat ice cream can lead to vomiting, diarrhea, or constipation.
If you really want to give your dog a some lactose treat, frozen yogurt might be a better choice. If you’re making any modification in your pet’s diet, be sure to monitor him carefully for any physical or behavioral changes.
